KCBY Story on the Warming Center
REEDSPORT, Ore. — When freezing weather hits, the Covenant United Methodist Church in Reedsport opens its doors.
They provide a warm bed, shower and laundry services along with a hot dinner and breakfast in the morning.
They’re open whenever overnight temperatures drop below 35 degrees and volunteers say you don’t have to be homeless, just cold.
“We have families that are living in their cars just because of their circumstances,” says Peggy Edson, a warming center volunteer. “Too many businesses have closed down; they can’t make enough money to get some place.”
“And this part of Douglas County is one of the lowest income areas,” adds volunteer Sunnie Hedden.
